I think Cavscout got it in his post. The difference is likely in the weaver. It almost looks like the Buchanan (Macgregor Hastie Variant) Weathered or Buchanan Old Weathered to me http://www.tartanweb.org/weathered/buchanan.html
Great looking tartan

'Tis my considered opinion that this gorgeous tartan IS a Buchanan, and it is the Buchanan Old Sett Weathered.
Here is KiltStore's (Scotweb) photo of the Lochcarron 16oz Strome Select weave. The colouring is slightly different, as happens from one weaver to another, but the pattern of the sett is identical.

This one goes onto my wish list straight away!
Take care,
Ham.

I think the difference is in the photo editor. I tuned up the saturation a little bit to make the skintones look a little less palid, and the colors in the tartan looked a lot more like the ones in the online catalogs. I do like the Foggy Buchanan though, and wouldn't it be great if someone actually did weave it like this.
Regards,
Rex.

Hamish has it spot on. It is Buchanan Old, weathered colors. And if the colors in the picture are true, I'd be willing to bet the cloth is Lochcarron's 16 oz strome. I've made a few kilts from that cloth and it looks pretty spot on to the color and quality of the kilts in the photo.
Aye,
Matt

BTW, I realize that the photo Ham posted of the Lochcarron sample doesn't match the coloring of the kilts in the original photo. But I find that the sample swatch photos of Lochcarron's cloth on line typically don't show the colors very well (I don't know who shot those sample photos, but they need work!). In any case, what I said in my immediately previous post is true. I've worked with Lochcarron's cloth in this tartan before, and it looks just like the kilts in the first photo posted.

Hi Matt - it's actually Buchanan Old (not Buchanan Ancient, or Weathered). Hope this helps!

to all who contributed to the search... i have passed the info on to my friend. Now he has to decide whether he really wants it or not... There is a similar tartan available locally at about 1/2 the price that he may go for instead but if he is really in love with this one he will have to bite the bullet & take the plunge!
Will post pics when completed
ITS A KILT, G** D*** IT!

Nick,
What I said previously. It is the Buchanan Old, in the weathered colors (i.e. not the modern colors, or the ancient colors).
Lochcarron offers the Buchanan Old in their strome range (16 oz) in both the ancient and the weathered colors. The kilts pictured are in the weathered colors.
