I have a pair of trews and my opinion is that they look quite smart...on someone who is thin with long legs. Neither trait do I possess so when I wear them I feel a right numpty. Oddly enough they spend a great deal of time in my closet. 
If you have the right build I think they can look really nice.

I agree. For me with thunder thighs and what my dad refers to as "Scottish calves", kilts are the way to go, but men with long, slender legs are the perfect model for trews.
