Celtic Croft Damascus Sgian Dubh

Anyone out there own this Sgian Dubh from The Celtic Croft, I was thinking of ordering it for my formal Signal Ball.

Whatever you do don't buy the cheap damascus blade sgian dubhs on ebay that go for around 7-10 bucks.

outpost knives on eBay has some nice sgian dubhs for about half what Celtic Croft is asking. These ones come from Scotland.

A few words of warning about inexpensive "damascus" blades: (1) most of these come from India or China; (2) many of these are "pattern etched", not true damascus; (3) a lot of these blades are very brittle and prone to snapping even under moderate use.

Rather than risk a hundred bucks on something of unknown origins, deal with someone like Rab Gordon instead.

Ooh Ooh! I ordered one of his Sgian Brew’s looks nice, and right now, I don’t really have the time, space or proper tools to make my own Sgian Brew or Sgian Dubh.

I see that the barters system is alive and well on this site, but I doubt anyone needs their kitchen / bathroom, counter tiled, I do good work, will post pictures if wanted, but that would involve travel etc.

Most of the sgian dubh from outpost knives sold on eBay are made in Scotland. He has a couple which look like they are Hanwei, but the quality is excellent.

The inexpensive sgian dubh from Sussen are better than the expensive one I have that was made in Sheffield. I am regluing the metal bits on the sheath after 20 years,

On the other hand, the sgian dubh that look like this are crap and best used as letter openers. First off, they look Polynesian rather than Scottish. They even have a Tiki on the tip of the pommel.


I can't warn people away from these enough.

I just received the celtic croft sgian dubh. Given my interest in things military and weaponry of various sorts, I wanted to see this knife.

It's a hanwei knife, which means it's actually made in China. Not bad. Paul Chen makes good knives and has a very good reputation as a knife and swordmaker, even though he is not Scottish. It's a Wee tad heavy by my taste, but looks good tucked in the hose. A bit annoying that Celtic Croft didn't say this knife was made in China. Although, quite a few sgian dubh, especially on the budget end of the spectrum, are not made in Scotland.

The best dealers on eBay are Sussen and Outpost Knives. There are a couple of Scottish dealers there as well.

You have to be an educated shopper as many of the posts show; however, Scots are known for being frugal!
