Why because that is what you like? That's your opinion and it is perfectly valid but it is by no means unversal.

That's fine by me. First I don't think anyone should wear a kilt to a renn faire, particularly a modern one. Second I would prefer the trousered majority not take up kilt wearing. the kilt symbolises much more to a great many people than just an alternative way to get dressed in the morning. If a proper kilt just becomes an alternative to pants then it lessens that meaning. I personally don't care what anyone wears with a utilikilt or their like because they are not representative of the same thing as a kilt, even if they are commonly called one.

You seem to be stuck on this idea of a PC worn with a kilt. While a kilt is, by many, saved for those occasions it is just as frequently worn with tweeds and sweaters or even a polo shirt to be more casual. The reason I don't wear t-shirts and flip-flops with a kilt is two-fold. First I rarely walk around in beach wear unless I am the beach and I wouldn't take a kilt to the beach. Second because of what the kilt symbolises to me I would never wear it in a way that I feel lessens that.

Well I have taken a kilt to a beach but only to stroll along it.

I was referring more to the idea of actually going to the beach for the day, which I would do in a pair of shorts and sandals, I wouldn't want a kilt sitting on the sand. I have done the same as you, taken a stroll on the beach while kilted, but that's not quite the same thing.

Am I the only one beginning to find this thread eerily similar to the "proper kilt" discussion a little while back?

Jamie, I don't think a beard is too formal I think you can leave it on next time you are only "dressy", I do.

In all seriousness thank you Jamie, you made my point perfectly. Even very casual, you are neat and well turned out and I personally believe that is as it should be with a kilt. A kilt is not (nor should it be) a sloppy/grundge article of clothing.

I think that the original question is how far do you let you standards slip while wearing a kilt. I would not wear tee shirts or sneakers, just because I think that I look crap in them. My casual outfit would be wool kilt, sporran, hose & flashes, polished shoes, open neck shirt-with short or long sleeve pullover, depending on the weather, thats as casual as I get. I have worn boots with scrunched down hose before, but not very often. I am not a kilt snob, as I think that other people look great with tee shirts etc. But I do try to dress smart when I wear my kilt.

I dress very casually. I wear muscle shirts and sandals with my kilts, and I don't really give an airborne rodent's posterior what the kilt snobs think. It startles some people, but it has also turned some folks on to kilt wearing that never would have thought of it. I know the snobs say that that is a bad thing, but I don't. I'd like to see a lot more people wearing kilts, formally, casually, sloppy or neat-because they are one of the best garments available.
I'd like to point out to the kilt snobs that kilts are clothing, not uniforms. Especially when it comes to my kilts, as I made them, not you. The only real rule I can think of that should be drummed into anyone about kilt wearing is pleats go in back. And even then, as long as someone knows it, if they decide to wear it wrong it is their business. Other than that, the kilt snobs trying to dictate that a kilt must only be worn with hose, flashes, sporran, sgian dubh, ghillie brogues, and a certain type of shirt are really trying to turn the kilt into a "Scotsman costume."
THE KILT IS NOT A F COSTUME!!!*
*and that is as politely as I can put it.
