Tartan Gowns (since the subject has come up)

I am planning to work some tartan into a dress I will make in the not so near future. Probably just an accent though, I'm not so much for allover patterns on gowns.

I notice something, guys.... Not too many of our lasses have responded to this thread. But you know, I dinnae think our lasses are intimated by gorgeous models, I mean every clothing stores catalog is chock-a-block with clothes draped over gorgeous models.

so what's the deal, here? How come only Cynthia, AcuteEnigma and Red Lioness have posted here, but none of the other lasses have anything to say?

Cynthia thinks she would love to make one, AcuteEnigma likes the Faire dress, bodice and chemise, and Red Lioness wants to have kids....*grin*

But how about our other lasses. Here's a thread all about THEIR clothes, admittedly very "girly" sorts of clothes, but they don't have much to say. What's up with that?

I think we need to know. I know full well that the Cloaked in Midnight Joan would no more wear anything like this than fly, she thinks tartan is "dowdy".

Hi, this is my 1st post!! I'm the girl in the wedding dress that Steve posted, i loved my tartan gown although in the Memphis heat it was a bit of a killer. My hubby as were the groomsmen all wore full weight 8yard kilts along with the rest of the full highland dress.
All the pic's of the gowns posted are gorgeous , i love the majority of them

These have given me all kinds of ideas. I've pretty well shrunk out of my formal gown (losing 50 pounds will do that to a girl). I'm going to need somehthing new by the USMC ball in November.

I don't care for most of the runway fashions, but I love the way the first couple of dresses are gathered up to show the underskirt or petticoat - very nice.

OK - WAY to many projects have made it to the 'to do' list now. Hanging out with you guys is DANGEROUS!

I already own the boning which I bought on line. Caution though, when searching for suppliers some of the websites are practically pornographic. I did find one that didn't offend my sensibilities (http://www.corsetmaking.com) and ordered the boning, grommets, lacing, setting tool and a busk for a traditional corset (undergarment).
I would think the most difficult thing about using a tartan or print would be lining it up properly so the pieces come together well at the seams. As an outer garment it would be critical and might be easier if using see-through pattern pieces.
I'm not fond of the lacing on the front which is just for show... I prefer lacing on the back or the style that has them on both sides.

I also used the corsetmaking.com site to order my hardware for my first corset (which was a Laughing Moon pattern), as well as the boning for a Victorian bodice (Truly Victorian). I was very pleased with them and would order from them again, as well (it was a little while ago).

I agree... lots of careful lining up of the patterns to get things just right for something like tartan on a fitted garment like this.

I could not find any postings where we lassies could ask advice about what to wear. Since this at least addresses the feminine clothing subject I thought I'd ask here.
I own a 'ladies kited skirt'. It goes on much like a man's kilt with overlapping aprons and buckles and a kilt pin. It is cut for a lady and is the proper length just below the knee. It is of a weaver's choice not a clan tartan. I have worn it with a dressy blouse with jabot as well as other dress blouses. Can I wear it in a more casual form? What shirt/ top would be appropriate (the corset look would not go). And what do I wear on my feet? Summer heat is too hot for nylon (or silk) hosiery and dress shoes are not practical at highland games.
Do ladies ever wear 'kilt hose'? can a casual shoe be worn... what type?
Tartan day is almost upon... I need to know!

Thank you for asking this, TatterDel. At some point, I am wanting to get some sashes and kilted skirts and everything is new to me. I was wondering if the ladies had a section we needed to post in for questions and tips. Looking forward to seeing the replies!
