Here's my two cents. Keep BOTH picture "forums" open. why?
Well, for example, think to the photo threads on recent Burns Nights. Those threads have lots of pictures which are all linked by a common idea, in our case the "Nor Cal Burns Night". While it's currently possible to add one or two or three photos to a thread about "Nor Cal Burns Night", when viewing the photos, there's not much context to link them together. The same goes for Cessna2towser and pour1malt's Scotland trip photo threads.
i admit that I haven't tried the slide show function, yet. That might answer my thoughts.
I think that's the viewpoint of many of us. Trip photo threads were popular and appreciated.

I can't seem to get that to sound right. Probably better to take it out.

Okay, I just posted my first pic into the new gallery. Did work like a charm (just like uploading into my website files)
My only question/comment is about when I posted a description, it gave me options, as I have now, of using different fonts / colors / etc, yet when I posted it just showed the html for that part.
Question:
will this be corrected? and is there anyway I can go back & delete that part of my description to "clean it up"?
Now all we need are some more catagories, as has been suggested earlier on (hint, hint, nudge, nudge)

ABSOLUTELY!!!
A gallery is nice but it does NOT take the place of photo threads.

I gotta say that if Hank wrote the code that created the gallery from scratch, that's a nifty piece of programming. So far, for me, it works well. I've uploaded 3 photos and they all were painless. I do like the search feature for things like user names.
AND.....
It's possible to do what I want to do....view a lot of pictures linked together by a common idea. Here's how it works.
Let's say the SEKS group has a big get-together at the Albanach Mountain Highwater Games. There are 30 pictures taken and lots of commentary by the guys, wives, girlfriends, dogs, etc. Those pics are all uploaded by a couple of the guys into a thread in the "Meeting other X-Markers" subforum.
Two days later, I come through and want to view some pictures. I look through the "Meeting Other X-Markers" sub-forum and see that the SEKS guys have done it again. So I click on the thread in the forum. A mess of individual picture links come up. I've overwhelmed, I don't want to click on 20 individual links, one for each picture and see if anybody has commented on the pic. Instead, I choose the slide-show option and watch them all in succession. If I want, I can add a comment to an individual picture. ( did this yesterday with a pic of Riverkilt and the Wizard of BC ... Ron and Steve, just for practice).
I mean, it works, it really does. I GET it. And I also twig how tricky the programming would be for one guy to bang this out all in his spare time. I ASLO "get" the idea of the pictures not "expiring". In the old version, if someone linked to a pic on their web server (what I do) or to a link on photobucket, but then three month slater they deleted the picture, then of course it's not viewable on X-Marks. But when you upload a picture to X-Marks in the new gallery, the actual data file is held on the X-Marks server, and it's "permanent", relatively speaking. Well, it's permanent until you (the owner of the file/account it was uploaded under) chooses to delete it. The point is that images on X-Marks don't now depend on files existence on someone elses' servers, like your ISP or Photobucket. Hey, the Gallery is cool!
It's just that for this one particular function which is very popular......wanting to view a whole lot of pictures associated with one event, or one travelogue (or whatever).... the old format was better than the new gallery format. They're both good, they're just good for different things.
My two guineas.....cheers!

I admit I haven't had enough time lately to figure out the new forum. Will there be a "how to" document for us slow learners?

We are trying to sort out what to do with the Photo threads guys and gals, as we too enjoy them. The Show us your pics section was originally meant as a temporary fix for the old gallery and was meant for pics of kilts, but turned into so much more.
For now, or until we all hear anything new, post your kilt night photo threads in kilt nights, post other events in that appropriate thread, Kilt pics can go into Traditional or Contemporary, DIY, or General, Accessories go in (you guessed it) Kilt accessories if you want to post pics of your cat, your hat collection, or your favorite tree...it goes in off topic. If you want to post pics of that fungus growing on your toe.......Don't!!!
So for now, let's all follow those guides and see how it works until the big wigs give us more direction. Fair?

Sounds fair enough to me Colin - I guess travelogue type pics go into off topic but if there is a kilt or kilts in them it's ok to squeeze them in something kilt related?

Where's the rubber chicken forum? We deserve a rubber chicken forum! I'm holding my other comments on the picture posting conundrum until Mike says it's totally fixed. I see no need to make him totally flustered while he's busy fixing all the problems with the new format. When everything is finally working, if there's still no rubber chicken forum, well all bets off...
