I know that the Faculty of Advocates has very stringent requirements for Court dress. Of course, the chances that I would ever be an advocate are slim (and query whether anyone would hire an American to represent them in a Scots court, kilted or no.). I assume that solicitors can technically wear what they want on a daily basis (no court dress in Sheriff's court, right?), but suspect that, like America, there is a rather strong tradition of wearing dark business suits.

Though I'd love to hear from anyone who has more practical experience.
