    Which tartan is this?

I was told this is the Black Watch tartan:

But the Black Watch tartan is black, blue, and green. This tartan looks as if it has purple instead of blue, either that or the colours are way off. And the smaller stripes in this tartan are far too thick, they should only be 2 threads thick if it were the Black Watch tartan.

It looks very similar to all of the Black Watch tartans I have seen, but not the same. Is this a tartan which has been misnamed? Or is it actually Black Watch and I have learned to pick out irregularities in tartan?

Have you seen that kilt in person or is that a picture from somewhere? I could be the Camera's a bit off. Besides... we McGregor's have a much better looking tartan than that.

May just be the camera, but if I had to guess I would say Sutherland District. That is to the Black Watch sett, but usually woven with azure in place of the blue to provide lighter colors.

This is also known as Sutherland #1

Good eye. I would not have noticed the unusual nature of that tartan unless someone pointed it out to me.

That is the Black Watch tartan. The blue looks to me to be blue, not purple (though some mills' blues look more purple than others). That's a minor variation between weavers and not a major matter for concern.

As to the black lines being "2 threads thick" this is a matter of proportion, not a specific number.

This is definitely the Black Watch tartan -- it just may have some minor differences from other versions of the Black Watch tartan you may have seen before.

The Black Watch tartan and the Sutherland district tartan are the same tartan. It is also the same under several other names. What you have there is a government sett, and is probably intended to be Campbell or Black Watch. In the modern color schemes with the different weaving firms some colors have a different color hue to them. It's going to be my guess that that tartan is Strathmore Mills. My brothers Gunn kilt is in Strathmore's modern color scheme and the blue bands have an almost purple appearance to them. Then again it could be a host of different/other weaving firms.

Got to Tartan Web and glance at the color differences with the different mills.

This is a kilt I ordered for myself, adding to my collection.
