I never fail to be amazed when people suggest photographs are printed backwards. I offer this advise: Look for buttons. A gentleman's buttons are on the right. Now look at the buttons in the photo... yup, they are on the right. While some early photos (usually glass plate photographs and some "tin types") are reversed image photos, the vast majority of photographs are printed right side around. Probably the most famous "backwards" photo is that of William Bonney, aka "Billy the Kid". For years historians looked at the photo and assumed Billy was left handed. Then someone pointed out that the buttons were on the wrong side, and even the loading port on his Winchester rifle was on the wrong side. This has led to a general belief that all old photos are printed backwards, which just isn't the case.
