I like a nice short parade that ends at a bar.

    Handsome tartan

Assuming you aren't wearing a jacket -- only the vest -- I'd personally be inclined to go with a shade of gray matching one of the many in the tartan itself; this should give you quite a range, and you could even have a couple ranging from lighter gray to charcoal (?) to suit any given occasion.

If you want something a little brighter, pretty much anything could work, though I'd think warmer tones (reds) in particular would be quite striking.

Gray is a neutral so you can wear any color with it.

Black would work, especially with black hose, shoes, and a black sporran.

I would go with a black vest and hose to match.

One advantage of plain black is that it can be used for many other things too, such as "upgrading" an Argyl to Tux status. Just my tuppence worth.

I would also agree with the red.. I don't know why people want to dress like Johnny Cash all the time.
