    Why not?

To be honest, wearing a plaid without a kilt would look odd to me.

There are other options; some folks on this side of the pond would choose a tartan necktie, for example.

    Welcome from SW Missouri, btw!

Long story. Partially its because of financial reasons. We've got tuxes rented thru Men's Wearhouse mostly because when you rent 4, the groom's tux is free. Unfortunately, this means I'm stuck with pants. $500 as opposed to $650 and being able to easily get guys from different parts of the country fitted and done is worth alot to us. The other reason is that it's really not appropriate wear for at least one of my groomsmen. Partially for looks (he'd look horrid).

So that's what I'm stuck with.

You might consider a tartan bow tie and cumberbund...

Just what I was going to suggest, but you beat me to it. Then you will have it and can wear the tie (if you go for bow ties) and other times when the kilt is not an option, but a tux, or dinner jacket is. (I know few, but won't go into that here).

    from both southern US coasts!

Got to say no to the plaid...but if you can get away with it, perhaps some tartan socks?
