    Question wool alternatives for kilt

So one of the students in our pipe band is allergic to wool. Even holding a pair of wool/acrylic hose last night made her hands red.

I figured I would ask the X-perts what they thought. Are there any wool alternatives that are as nice (or very close) as wool?

Our pipe major doesn't think so and says she should just wear tight shorts under her wool kilt to act as a buffer.

Why, try PV of course. PV=polyviscose (polyester/rayon)

You should have your pipe major wear a kilt rubbed in poisin ivy... with a pair of shorts as a buffer, of course. Pipe majors tend to be as sensitive to personal needs as a rock to the weather.

    but
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

Hmm I always thought the kilt I bought my hubby from Kiltmart as a joke was poly viscose. Maybe it's not...

I'd agree PV would be the best alternative to wool just to show you one of these is PV the other is wool, which is which?

Here are the backs of the same two kilts

Typically when someone has a PV kilt it will likely be a casual kilt with a narrower apron and about half the pleats. Absolutely these will not look right when placed beside a full traditional kilt but not because of the fabric but because of the construction. As long as the kilt is made like a traditional kilt (lots of pleats and a wide apron) it will look very much like a traditional wool kilt.

To take Glen's example a bit further, which of these is PV:

    Oooh guessing games (Scottish Roulette?)
Well since you said (in your photo album) you got the MacPherson one from Canadian Casual Kilts I'm gonna guess that's the PV one. Had I not known where you got it, I would probably not have had the foggiest idea.

Wompet (cue Jeopardy music) I have no idea but I'm gonna guess the one to the right is PV.

If you kiltaholics can't tell the difference at a glance I'm sure no one watching our band play is going to notice. Now I just have to help my friend convince our pipe major of that...we've got until November.
