First negative reaction in over 1 1/2 years
I'm kind of surprised that it took so long, but over the weekend I had the first negative reaction to the wearing of the kilt. My wife and I were at a hotel in Beachwood OH which had a bunch of kids from, I think, Baltimore MD there for some sort of football (pigskin, not soccer) tournament. As we were stepping off the elevator on our floor after having breakfast two older boys got on after we exited, and I had a feeling they were going to say something. Yup, they did, after we had gotten halfway down the hallway and, as I'm sure, just as the elevator doors were closing we heard one of them yell out "Queer!". My wife, bless her heart, responded "A**holes!" I'm certainly more disappointed in the ignorance of the two morons than I am annoyed or angry. As we were checking out I looked for them if only just to warn them that the next kilted man they called that might not be so easy-going and that they could wind up eating through a straw for a couple of months if he wasn't, but I guess someone else will have to educate them. I also wanted to ask them if they had ever seen Braveheart. <sigh>
Oh well. I just have to consider the source and remember that after the length of time I've been wearing the kilt if that is all that I've had to endure I'm fortunate.

It just shows how sad and isolated these lads are that you have never encountered such complete weirdos in a year and a half of kilting. The only thing they achieved from this was exposing their own insecurity and inadequacy.

Pimply-faced, post-pubescent punks hurling epithets over the shoulder just as the doors are closing? They are cowards and not worth your time.

Rex.
At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.

Well, that's what happens...you get a couple of clever a-holes who are all full of alcohol and just got their share of TV full contact "male-ness" and they feel like they just have to show off their rapier like wits by insulting the first person that they see who they would consider not living up to their high standards of guy-ness. Alpha males, obviously...gotta love 'em. Wonder if it would have happened if there was only one of them...?

In my experiences such morons only hurl insults while in the company of other morons, safety in numbers you know. Of course its only proper for such dim wits to call you a queer or pansy while with their friends, so that if you decide to try and hurt them their friends can back them up.

Actually, 1.5 years without a negative comment is pretty darn good. Usually, if anyone says anything about me wearing a kilt in public, it's been positive ("Nice kilt.” etc.).
I am still waiting for someone (outside of my own family) to call me a
"Cross-dresser", "look at the man in a skirt", etc.
The fact that this person waited until the doors were closing to say what they said without giving you the time of day to explain why men like us wear what we wear means:
(1) They have a narrow view of the world, meaning men shall wear pants only and
women shall wear skirts only as dictated by the fashion nazis,
(2) They don't understand other people of the world, (men wear skirted garments in
Hawaii, Asia, Africa, Scotland, etc.)
(3) They have been taught by those in authority that if a man wears a skirted
garment then there's something wrong with that man.
(4) They are indeed what your wife called them.
So, here's to the next 1.5 years and beyond. In any movement, there will always be those that resist change, we just need to educate those that are willing to listen and accept what we are.

Of course, that isn't much different than how we send the British packing.
Of course, I know a few people that could make it down the stairs in time to catch up (especially when the elevators make stops between floors, and the idiots arn't in a hurry towards the door.)

Negative Reaction
The reaction was just an opportunity for a couple of lugs to express their bigotry.

Excellent point, Rex!
I often call that sort of no-risk nastiness "retreater's conceit"; same sort of show-off cowardice as yelling insults at pedestrians from a passing vehicle, a specific tactic that I have heard employed not only to defame kilted men, but to humiliate large-sized women, compelling many to become societal shut-ins.
But there I go digressing; this is about wearing a kilt, and how to deal with cretins.
My method, if they're afoot, is to confront them, quickly & calmly, but firmly, even if I have to backtrack.
But ignoring them probably is the high road!

Take it from someone who spends five days a week with 13-18 year old boys...they secretly wish they had the courage to do something so out of the norm as wear a kilt!!
Secondly, their mamas/daddies need to give them a sound whuppin' and teach them some manners! And their chaperones need to be doing a better job! :buttkick:
