Well,this is my first post!
My fiancee is a Mclaughlin gal.We have decided to have a kilted wedding. No set date, yet.
I am curious as to whether it would be better to rent a kilt set.Or to start constructing one piece by piece. At least this way I would own it.
I've worn kilts SCA style, when I played SCA 10 yrs ago. But,this is different and much more important.
Any ideas?

From the Cape Fear River Valley, NC In answer to your question I would definitely start with a quality kilt in the tartan you will be wearing. The problem with rentals are that they are usual generic (universal) tartans, usually (from the weddings I have seen) either Black Watch or Stewart. If you construct it piece by piece, then the shock to the wallet will be somewhat easier to handle. I would recommend either a Black Argyle or Braemer jacket, as these can be moved up or down the formal scale by the addition of a vest, (5 button, less formal, 3 button more formal) tux shirt or dress shirt, etc, etc.
Lots of threads and posts about this.
Also early congratulations from a pair of 50 year veterans.

as far as the kilt itself goes, if you don't already have one, a kilt in your family tartan in which you will get married is a priceless heirloom that will have immense sentimental value to you, your wife and future generations. if you're able to sock away $10 a week, you'll pull it together in no time (especially if you still have no date yet). when it's time to drop the hammer, usa kilts will be there... good luck.
and congrats to you new owners in waiting.

My lineage is traceable to Ireland and possibly a subclan of the Macdonalds. My fiancee is a MacLaughlin (Lochland?)and already has a tartan.Would it be acceptable to adopt this tartan?I have heard that some families do this...?
By the way. Thanks for the response!

you might want to take this over to the tartans & heraldry board. you should get plenty of advise on what is customary and acceptable over there. good luck.
