Canadian Navy Seaman's Hat With A Kilt??

Was browsing Glengarry Hats and saw the Canadian Navy Seaman's Hat.

Back in 1960 I spent a summer at Comox, near Nanaimo, B.C. with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. Was an exchange deal with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets (Navy League sponsored, not Boy Scouts). Had a great time.

Somehow I managed to trade for a "Port and Starboard" cap as shown, but of course its much too small now. Thinking about getting another one that fits, but without the naval uniform it'd probably look more like some sort of chef's cap.

Then wondering what it'd look like with a kilt...a stretch for me. Anyone ever see or hear of a Port and Starboard being worn with a kilt?

Yes. At St. Thomas Episcopal School here in Houston, the Highland dancers wear one when dancing the hornpipe.

With a kilt I can't imagine it would look right. At the Highland Games this summer there was a LOTTA dancing going on but I never saw any kilts with this style of hat together.

Exactly. This particular cap is a piece of uniform kit which is worn by sailors and in this particular case by Highland dancers portraying sailors for one dance.

Couldn't agree more. A sailor's cap demands a "fore and aft rig" not a kilt. I was fortunate in that, when I joined, we didn't have to presss the seven seas into our bell bottom trousers anymore, though we did still have to wax the seams. (seven folds so you could roll them up properly when washing decks). Of course they took away that rig very shortly after I joined and gave us a sort of green maytag repairman's suit for working dress and a poorly made double breasted suit for dress rig - Canada's three services were made one - a very poor political decision. And OMG - someone should have shown that poor child how to wear a cap tally. The name of the ship goes across the front and the bow over the ear. Though I think the bow might have been at the back with the ribbon ends trailing down the back in the Victoria era.

Very cool, Ron! I was in RCSCC Rainbow in the late 60's, and we wore those. I'd have to say that I wouldn't wear it with the kilt, though.

I've seen the dancers wear the cap with a sailor outfit most of the time; but, for 'quick' programs, they have worn the cap with Highland attire.

You're right. What I saw was an exception to the proper costume and I should have recognized it as such.
