It would most certainly work for kilt hose.
Like I read somewhere, kilt hose are just socks with a thyroid problem.
If the book shows you how to make socks, then you can adapt it to make kilt hose.... But without a specific hose pattern, you'll need to learn how to decrease or increase (depending on direction of knitting, cuff down or toe-up.) The calf is much bigger than the ankle, so there must be shaping).
