I always love your input Sir. Now that you mention it, you're spot on! I shall never look at my matching flashes in the same light again.

To your questions I'd say the choice of hose colour is a personal one you may want to look at the Formal Thread here for some ideas. As for where to buy hose I'd say you should try the Scottish Tartan Museum here As I think Matt has large size hose, he is a member of the board and I'm sure he will be able to answer your questions once he sees this thread. Personally I'd wear hose that brings out colours of the tartan, or perhaps diced hose in Black and Red.
He beat me to it. I have a pair from the Scottish Tartans Museum and they are amazingly comfortable. I'm a 300 lb hiker and martial artist, so my calves are also huge. I wholeheartedly recomend the Lewis Rich socks. They're well worth the price tag. However, if you don't have $60 to spend on a pair of socks, check out this eBay store : http://stores.ebay.com/WB-SOCKS_KILT...QQftidZ2QQtZkm I have several pair from them. They're not top of the line to be sure, but they're nice, and they're very stretchy. They go over my calves (which have been described as "freakishly huge") just fine. Avoid Gaelic Themes- they're worthless for us. Locharran make excellent socks- if you get a size larger than your shoe size. I wear a 12, so I buy 13's from Locharran. Those work out really well. Hope this helps! And as to color, cream and white look cheap to my eyes. I avoid those like the plague, as was already stated elsewhere. I'd go with a navy, grey or black with that tartan. Actually, a bright red would go well, too. Cool colors in the kilt with hot colors in the socks make a sharp and striking look. As to flashes, if you get the Lewis Rich socks, you won't need any. They hold themselves up quite well. Otherwise, get flashes that are a complimentary color to whatever socks you buy.

    Welcome to the board!

    KIlt hose suggestion

    Hello David,
This is Patti kiltmaker in Vermont. Being a native midwesterner from MIchigan I though I might have a suggestion for your kilt hose ideas. I think that the wisconsin tartan, being mostly a Hunting tartan style, gray hose would be nice. perhaps with yellow flashes or if you have leftover wisconsin tartan from your kilt i could perpare wisconsin tartan flashes for you! Have fun at your dinner and let me know if I can help. The brand hose I suggest is from Matthew Newsome from Hawick Hose. they have nice choices in "viking sizes" and lots of colors. I prefer this hose since they dont slip down after wearing them. pastopcat@yahoo.com Catamount Kilts.

Here j is my "humble Opinion".

This is a FORMAL event. The ??? is, IMHO, is how formal do you wish LOOK.
    1. BLACK TIE FORMAL ( one step "below "White Tie) = BLACK HOSE & BLACK Traditional Tie Garters ( IMHO, the "cut ties" look "off the rack") the reason is 2 fold.
    A. This combo DOES not "compete" with your KILT by drawing attention to your legs. IMHO your Kilt should be the "focus"
    B. the "understated" black hose/flashes, as mentioned above, will not "emphasize your "LARGE CALVES"

    2. BLACK TIE FORMAL ("RELAXED") = Here your choice of Hose/Flashes (again I would stay with the "Traditional Tie Garter ) will dictate how "relaxed" your look will be. (the following is in order of "relaxation")
    A. Black/Navy flash or Navy/Navy flash
    B. Black or Navy Hose with a "colored" flash. ( I would choose Navy with a "Bright" Blue flash.)
    C. Colored Hose with either a "matching" flash or a contrasting colored flash.

    Thank you!

First, thank you all for welcoming me to the forum & for your input. As for my Burns Dinner outfit I’m not going to do the full Prince Charlie outfit for this one. I don’t have the jacket & I’m not going to try & just throw something together. I will get a PC outfit in the future however. For this dinner I’ve decided to go with a white button-down shirt, black tie, & a black sweater vest. I have decided to go with the black hose with dark burgundy/yellow flashes. My St. Andrew’s Society assured me they would rather people come & enjoy themselves rather than adhere to a strict dress code & I like that mentality.

I will post a picture once I get the outfit together.

    Take care

Good choice, that'll work well. Consider at some point getting 'Lovat Blue' hose from the WB-socks website previously mentioned. They would work with your tartan too.
