Interesting thread. I come from a city that pronounces Acme as Ah-ka-meh. Water as wooder. And we fight daily over Lancaster being LAN-kaster or Layn-KAS-ter. Kilo-meters or kil-ahmiters just go into the fold.

So here's a related question to folk's who use metric system. We drive cars based on miles... so when I calculate how fuel efficent my car is I say Gas Mileage. Do you say Gas Kilometerage????????

I think the problem is due to a non-linear approach...

First, people used what they had to measure, weigh, etc. I.e. hands, feet, thumbs, etc.

This was all done to make things easier.

Then some bleeding scientist came along and made everything difficult and tried to apply logic to the system.

Well, out here in the Wild West (on the north side of the Mexican drug cartels), a kilo-meter measures the potency of the pot.

We say fuel efficiency! Actually, I sometimes say mileage. I still weigh myself in pounds, too, and measure my kilts in inches, but driving in kilometres and buying gas by the litre is now pretty much ingrained.

If I recall correctly from the Land Rover forums [I have been spending my time on here rather than there] the corollary to miles per gallon [MPG] is litres/ liters per 100 Kilometer.

As to getting the US, at least officially, out of the dark ages I think we need to do it cold turkey i.e. "for 6 months starting July 2009 EVERYTHING will be marked in both systems, starting 1 Jan 2010 it will ONLY be marked in metric"
