If you suspect that you will need a tux equivilient at least once a year then I'll bet it is a worthwhile investment.

Other options could be finding a good used tux with tails (and waistcoat) and having them turned into a formal kilt outfit, this is what I did and my formal rig has served me well for a the last few years.
