What would be a good first time place to go kilted?

For me, the first time beyond the Ren fest was when I had a zipper break on my shorts, and all my other clothes were in a pile. I grabbed the kilt from the closest and put it on. Dropped my son off for his field trip, and went to the mall. It was a 'don't have a choice' moment, but it worked out well, except from a few small glitches.

Well, I guess you've answered your own question. Wear it to supper somewhere you don't often go. No hotel restaurant management are ever going to be nasty to you, their customer.

Personally, I wore mine out walking a few times - a few other walkers obviously noticed, but heck, they look pretty odd in their waterproof overtrousers, cargo pants, and those AWFUL trekking poles!

I'd echo someone else's comment: "I enjoyed myself, since what I was noticing was the other guy's girlfriends looking and grinning." Too right.

The thing the kilt has made me aware of is how much we live in a multi-cultural society and how many people from other cultures wear clothing that's specific to them too. Yes, in some places, people still stare at a woman in a Sari, or Muslim men in their white robes, and Sikhs in turbans etc etc. So, in those places, people may stare at a bloke in a kilt. Tough.

Don't wait for the first Highland games as that could be too far off. Find out what Celtic organizations there are in town by looking on the Internet and go to their next monthly public meeting in your kilt. There's always room for spectators rather than participants. Moreover, these orgs always need help and some put on entertainment that's free.

oh yeah... I just got $100 for my b-day, and I am fighting sending that to my CC and then using that CC to buy a kilt from Rocky. Soo tempting....

Wear it around the house enough to get in the habit of sweeping your pleats and tucking the aprons when sitting down. It should feel as you are always dressed. Then go out anywhere in public. Should you desire to head to a pub, do so when either Scot or Irish entertainment is on the calendar. Some pubs are very Celtic in theme, and are safe all the time.

I first wore mine to work, but the guys here are used to their boss being a nutter, so there wasn't much in the way of comments. Then I just started going everywhere kilted, and if someone wants to make a wise **** remark, f%*@ them! I don't have time for stupidity. So many more things they could comment on in this world than a man in a kilt!
