Finaly my 1st DIY Sporran

[Kilted Rogue]

After many months of slow work and endless toil. I give you my 90% complete DIY sporran. The 10 % that needs finishing is a new back flap, i dont like the way this one came out. and i plan to add some silver beads to the drawstrings to add a little bling and break up the black.

The Details:
Pattern Thompson book "So you are going to wear the kilt"
Black Suede front and back panels
stiffener and you will see the back flap are tooling belly.
All hand stitched, i did learn a new trick with this one. Suede is a bit stretchy, so i used masking tape to stablize the leather and then draw my pattern on the tape. Cutting it out was a breeze.

I plan to change the back flap, with a piece of black latigo leather. I dont have any on hand when i was making it.

Notice the matching buttons on my sporran and sporran belt


The stitching around the top got a little " rustic" as i was doing it late at night and without ample light. i was also stitching blind. trying to line it up as best as i could. all my holes where pre punch on the tooling belly and the ones in the suede where hard to find.

Looking good. I agree, some beads similar to the buttons would dress it up a bit and give it that extra something.

Great looking sporran. It's going to look really nice hung over a kilt.

And re your bonnet: I think you should tighten the bow up a bit, about 3-4" in length, and then trim the ends by cutting on the bias parallel to the cuts already there. Once you pull the bow thight (it will tend to loosen up just because it's grosgrain ribbon) put a stitch or two of black thread through the knot and you won't ever have to mess with it again. It should look like a little bow tie when you're done.

Dressing it would maybe be best done with braided leather thongs etc rather than adding beads. There is some wonderful plat work on some of the antque sporrans we have had in the past.

were can i find examples of those sporrans? I had toyed with the idea of braiding the border of the front flap instead of sewing it on with thread. I couldnt figure out how to do it. I like the idea of a braided edge.

I would have to enlarge the holes to allow for a braided thong.
