Jock's right!
I learned my lesson...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

So... This brings up a question in my mind, then. I plan on getting a wool black shadow tartan long plaid from SWK to use mostly for utilitarian purposes, such as keeping warm when I'm camping. I'm getting a black plaid so that it will match every single one of my kilts. Is a solid plaid with tartan kilts looked at as odd? Or what about a black plaid with a saffron kilt?

Yes, Nighthawk, but you are not in Scotland, and I'm sure there are many other things about you that will be looked at as odd.

Don't get cute, Ted. I was talking about my attire.

DON'T TRY TO TELL A SCOT HOW TO WEAR THE KILT. Even if you do actually know better than him!
A kilt should not be worn without a flat cap

Hmmm "worn properly" is like one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions!
Most replies appear to be about the accessories rather than the kilt itself and that will always provide bones of contention.
Common sense dictates that it should be with the pleats at the rear and not lower than mid knee. The rest depends upon occasion and sense of taste or preference. What one would wear with a kilt around the house and at a fully formal occasion are vastly different.
It is said that former Chief Justice Warren Berger stated that he could not define obscenity but that he knew it when he saw it. It can be the same with kilts and what determines what is proper. Individual peeves are not necessarily the best guide either as I have seen many posts that run along the lines of "not what I would wear, but you manage to carry it off" lines.

I can't help it, Nighthawk, cute is part of my nature.
I too am flawd and looked apon as odd, so understand, in a twisted and un-related way, your own oddness, Hawk. It is, after all, the way you agreed to be created and the role you play in the great balance of things.

Pretty much comes down to this. I say have a look at the oodles of pics on here for ideas. Strap it on. Look in the mirror. If you think you look decent and you feel good, then by all means, head on out!
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear
