Some say that. Others say, "It takes 34 muscles to frown, but only three to reach out and bitch slap some one."

I agree that sometimes I just really appreciate the anonymity that jeans have over a tartan kilt. It has nothing to do with being thin skinned. It has everything to do with wanting to go about my business un-noticed. I'm a natural introvert and a bit of a misanthrope, so sometimes wearing a kilt out and about is actual work for me. Obviously your mileage may vary. That does not mean that I'm ever afraid, embarresed or ashamed to wear my kilts. On the contrary, when I don my kilts I always wear them proudly. But sometimes the attention that they draw isn't something with which I feel like dealing.

I have not decided how much attention I want around town here. I am a lawyer and it is possible that I might put off potential customers. I will approach it conservatively. I ran into another lawyer hiking in the fall. I think his attention was so drawn to the kilt that he barely recognized me. I will wear it outside of my local realm with abandon. Comments? People are people. There are all kinds. I respond, (or don't), depending on the context. I do not go to places where really ignorant people might be drunk. I will go to a local bar on StPat's kilted. That will be interesting. I was on a cable channel auction recently for the Rotary Club. I have had nothing but positive response to that.

Believe me, the people at our WV festivals have been great, but it was scary to think most of these guys own guns!!!
I think you'd be surprised at how many of them may have actually been carrying them, too. At the gun shows I attend, they make you put a zip-tie through the action of any gun you bring in, but all it takes is a quick cut from a knife or scissors to remove it. If anyone wanted to do you harm, they could; however, gun shows are some of the safest places in America.
That said, I did get a lot of stares when I went, kilted, into a gun shop in Richmond to pick up a few boxes of ammunition.

Some people here are really misinterpreting these thoughts! I'm not the least bit thinned skinned regarding "kilt komments." I couldn't care less what people think - just ask my wife! My point is, as Jay correctly noted, that sometimes the attention, positive or negative, is just too damned much work to deal with... and I'd rather not.
I gather that some here wear the kilt for the attention it generates. I don't! I just like wearing 'em....

For the last nine or ten months, I've just put the kilt on to have pictures taken, or to try it on after making alterations in it, or my kilt jacket etc. I forget when I last dawned my pleated canvas, man skirt...
I guess I did go to Walmart wearing the kilt after the last time I had pictures taken. There was a nice young man who works at the sandwich shop there, and he said he also wears a kilt from time to time. I guess that attention was kind of neat. I've also been asked where to buy a kilt when wearing a kilt. It doesn't bother me.
