Bragging on my wife

My wife is a quilter. I go with her to quilt shows and she goes with me to gun shows. The local quilt shop she frequents in conjunction with others in the area had a challenge fabric competition. The challenge fabric was a blue bonnet fabric. All the shop owners voted on the best blocks in each of 4 categories. My wife made a block based on an antique quilt that is at my parents house. We found out Friday she came in 2nd in the combination category since her block used two different techniques. Over 200 blocks were entered into the contest. Her prize is a huge stack of quilt shop fabric. It was well done for her first time entering something like this. All the blocks entered will be sewn into quilts and donated to Fischer House and other groups helping support the families of wounded warriors here in San Antonio. Here is her block.

My mother was a life long quilter. Your wife's entry would win her serious prizes up here in New England. I hope she enjoys her new "stash".

That is not only beautiful, it is also very cleaver. I raise my bonnet to your wife's skill. Out of interest, quilt making seems to be a very American thing to do and I assume goes back to early settler times, can any one shed any light on quilt making history?
