Ahem,forgive me, but the Battle of Culloden was on 16th April 1746.I think that you should know that many people in Scotland regard the defeat of BPC as a good thing. I make no excuses for the barbaric behavior of the victorious British army, don't forget they had casualties too,but on the whole many take the view that in the long run Scotland was/is better off without him.I doubt that many Scots would even know the date of the battle.

Aye, Jock -- the real hero of the day, INMHO, was Duncan Forbes of Culloden -- a Government man who called for mercy for the vanquished Jacobites after the battle.

I would never attempt to tell someone how they should feel about their history and I completely respect the deeply held feelings that spring from one's ancestral roots. Having said that, I want to share something that has crossed my mind many times today.

To the best of my knowledge my family has ancestors on both sides of that fight, just as we had ancestors on both sides of the bitter fights at Shiloh, Fredricksburg and Chancellorsville in the 1860's. One can remember these dates, and honor those who fell, without necessarily taking a "side" about the old causes. And certainly one can remember the causes, too, and have strong feelings about them. As a boy who grew up in the American South with Yankee roots on his mother's side and Virginia roots on his father's, I had to learn to try to remember all my kinsmen, whatever their side in the "cause" and honor their lives ...and their deaths. It isn't always an easy thing to do, but worth trying, I think.

The battle of Culloden was fought in 1746. That fact that several posting had it taking place in the wrong year (1745) indicates, at least to me, that for many people the Jacobite rebellion is more about 21st century emotion, rather than an historical understanding or appreciation of 18th century Scottish Jacobism.

The Cameron's fought very bravely at Culloden. Well, all the Jacobites did. I truly like the story about the Cameron Chief lying on the ground watching his men fight their way further into Hanover lines than the other Jacobites. Or so the story goes.

For some of the others:

The failure of the "45 Rebellion was not Charlie's alone. The course of events, Lt. Generals (arguing), lack of training and preparedness all contributed to the failure of the "45. Culloden was the only engagement lost by the Jacobite's in the "45 rebellion.

I could go one for hours typing support for the "45 rebellion and Charlie, but most of you would probably deem me a mad romantic fool. It's easy to sit back many years later and pass judgment on those who sacrificed so much.

During the "45 campaign, Charlie showed many acts of mercy following military engagements with the enemy. He loosely said, "they are my father's subjects too." After his fathers death, he then referred to them as his subjects.

It's well known that their were more Scots fighting against the Jacobites then for them. I think it is the aftermath that is remembered and reviled the most.
The clearences that followed probably is the reason that Scots have had a bigger influence in the world than such a small country probably should have.
The '45 is also why kilts and tartan are such a symbol of Scotland and why we meet on this forum.
Please raise a glass in the memory of all Scots who fought and fell that day be they government or Jacobite.
