Fougasse just said what I had planned to say about what a 'piper usually does at a funeral.
I usually find a tree to stand under, and stay at a distance from where the people will gather. I once played at a cemetary which was right behind the church, and walked in front of the hearse the short distance that it had to travel.
What I'd suggest is when you talk to the 'piper, tell him/her when and where to be, and he/she will figure out how to choreograph it. The funeral director usually comes to me at the graveside and tells me the order of things, and nods or waves to me when it's time to strike in. I know this all sounds kind of loose, but it's always worked out fine.

Your family is in my prayers.

From the Clergy perspective any song is ok as long as you ar ok with it. If you feel it is fitting and honors your mom's memory than I say its ok.

John, I don't know when you'll be seeing this. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your brother. My own mother died under similar circumstances several months ago, so I know what you are going through.

May her memory be eternal and may she rest in peace.

The last funeral I went to that had a piper, by request of the person being buried they wanted all up tempo or jigs played? To each their own. It did get every one in a some what good mood for the wake. Hope you are all right?

I am sorry to hear of your lose. My prayers are with you and your family.

Any time I think of people who gone on before me the song "The Bonnie Banks O' Loch Lomond" always plays in my head.

For those few who don't know the story behind the song here is a great audio piece from NPR.

I'm sorry to read about your loss, John. Call a local pipe band and they will provide you with a piper and give you options for the funeral service.
