OT: Darien Scheme
A very interesting site devoted to Darien from the University of Glasgow Library's Special Collections:
http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/exhibns/month/may2005.html
The book I was referencing earlier was John Prebble's The Darien Disaster.
Jock, I had a look at The Darkest Jungle on Amazon.com -- I may just have to order that for our college library -- do thank your brother from one bookworm to another.
Regards,
Todd

The Caledonian tartan is a great choice-- do you pleat it to the sett or the stripe?

Wow, that Caledonian tartan has a lot of colors going on. You can accessorize it with almost any color under the sun!

I love my Caledonia kilt!
Let me tell you that I love you, and I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me, and now I'm going home
But if I should become a stranger
you know that would make me more than sad

Thanks for all the responses, this one may be it or perhaps I should still go with Aberdeen or even.... who knows. Still got a little time to decide and there are plenty of great choices out there. Thanks again. I did take some of your suggestions and order swatches of the tartan as well as a few others. Just for FYI the swatches on order are;
Caledonia Ancient
Aberdeen
Scottish American
US Army

Caledonia is a great tartan with lots of colors. You can match it up to many shirt/hose combos, dark or lovat green, lovat blue, red, maroon, black, even yellow!

Here's me and my dad (Dad's the young guy on the left) on tartan day last year, I'm sporting my USA Kilts Semi-trad.
Order of the Dandelion, The Houston Area Kilt Society, Bald Rabble in Kilts, Kilted Texas Rabble Rousers, The Flatcap Confederation, Kilted Playtron Group.

I read a book years ago on Darien, but I can't remember the author or title at the moment. I'll have a look on the university library's catalog (my alma mater owns the book) and see -- it was from the 1960's, so there may be something more current now.

Jock, thank you very much for that title. You were also correct that Cajunscot would come up with something and he did in this another thread. Here's the title:
"Darien: The Scottish Dream of Empire" by John Prebble.
He has given us a treasure trove of titles pertaining to Scots in the colonial period here in Georgia and elsewhere in North America in the thread itself which is located here:

Those are all good ones! I like the Scottish American, but I'm particularly fond of Caledonia. I don't have it on my short list, only because I have fabric in hand for a Carolina, whose colors are similar:

Carolina tartan is very nice indeed. I am looking forward to receiving all the examples I ordered to perhaps make my choice that much easier.
