Thanks, Puffer, I did just that... decided to keep the kit on and wore it to a fund-raiser last night then off to the pub with the Mrs. Have to say, felt like a million bucks.

I'll bet we could add a wing collar and silver tie, and call it morning dress.  In a pinch, it might do for black tie, but I'd rather have something black like the black Argyll & 3-button vest. Or the PC, since I already have this for almost all other occasions.
You're right, you could pull off black tie in it if you had to. It's not my only jacket, but if I had to choose just one to keep, it would be this one.
