I agree with what's been said already. Here's a little "why"...maybe...
We all share a common interest, i.e. the kilt. Not just OUR kilts, but the concept of the kilt, and all that goes along with it. A few folks here have already forgotten more than the rest of us will ever know about kiltedness/kilticism/kiltkeit, and when one of us needs to know something, we ask and get an answer. Sometimes the answers we get agree; at other times they contradict each other. However, the newbies here soon learn that, even though there's disagreement, there's a general sense of interest in each of us knowing as much as we can about the kilt and its paraphernalia, and a desire to help each other wear it as well as is possible, and to be as comfortable in it as possible. Whether traditional, contemporary, tartan, canvas, leather, PV, camouflage, box, knife, Kingussie or whatever else, we all come back to this general desire to wear our kilts with pride, and to help each other do the same. In a sense, we are a like family, a family that pulls for each other and not against each other. A family whose ultimate concern is the well-being of each of its members. A family who has a few crazy uncles, who contribute to the overall character and "color" of the family. With this kind of connection, personal trust is the only logical outcome. I, too, have bought and sold here, and have traded goods with people on the other side of the world, whom I probably will never meet face-to-face. I trust them though, because, like everyone else, I've read their posts and feel like I know them a little bit.
In short, XMTS, whether the whole Rabble or just a sett of us, is special because we all want to see the others succeed, not just in kilt-wearing but in business, personal relationships, our "real" families, and all aspects of our lives. When we know and realize that, our trust for each other is strengthened and our faith in our fellow man improves a notch or two, as well. To that ideal, I raise a glass of North Carolina (and you know how I feel about that ) muscadine wine and raise a hearty, "Slainte mhath!"

Yes, it is unique. Good for us! I've met several XMarkers and I have to say I agree that I've never met one I didn't like.

I, too, have met several X-markers, and liked 'em all. We have a pretty good sized get together several times a year, and you've never seen such a varied group of people.
And, now that you mention it, it never occured to me not to trust anyone here I've bought from or sold to.
What a cool place.

Clan, family, common interest, just plain old good folk. I think one of the commonalities is the desire for a community where your word is your bond....How Scotch!
I've bought things sight unseen off the forum, and been very pleased. I've gotten advice on buying new kilts, had been given special codes to get better deals, even given advice that I did not really want to hear. These are all hallmarks of people who are concerned about other people, albeit people who have an interest in kilts.
The friends here have helped me through tough times with loved ones, some of them have inspired me to make life changing modifications in my life, still others have invited me into their homes and family, why? Because we all recognize something of ourselves in each other.
Back in February I bought enough tartan to make two four yard box kilts and had it sent to one of our fellow members. I have not seen him on the forum for over a month. My concern is not for the yardage, but rather I'd just like to know he is alright. That is the mark of true community. We may never meet, but we care about each other. That is a rare and wondrous thing.
X-marks may be a forum devoted to kilts, but it is much, much, more. It is a Fellowship. I raise my glass of libation to you all, Slainte mhath! :blimp:
