    The Gael in Italy

As I mentioned in another thread, I had the privilege of seeing the Gael performed in the Roman Amphitheatre at Pozzuoli by the combined bands of the Sixth Fleet, USN, the Royal Marines and the pipes of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. A fantastic location, great musicians and wonderful orchestration.

Wow! That must have been some performance. Are thee any recordings of it or a similar performance?

None that I know of I'm afraid. I didn't even have a camera with me.

His pub/hotel is indeed in Dunkeld, a lovely town. One endearing feature is a wall full of instruments. Visiting musicians are encouraged to take one off the wall and play, which I certainly did when there. I ended up 'jamming' with another visitor, playing Dire Straits tunes and other random things, at the picnic tables by the banks of the Tay, just outside the door.

On that same trip, we were staying in Dornie (I think?), and I was playing "Caledonia" as we enjoyed a pint - once again, outside at some picnic tables. A small group gathered from the pub inside. It turned out they had gathered for a funeral, and "Caledonia" had been the favorite song of the man they had come to honor. Pure coincidence?

One more Dougie story - we were fortunate enough to see him perform near Washington DC one time. During a song, he broke a string, usually a song-ender for a guitarist. While continuing to entertain the audience, he somehow managed to loosen what was left of the string, tie a knot in it, tighten it back up and continue the song! Good Scottish frugality and extraordinary showmanship all wrapped up in one. Go see him if you can.
