Back when clans were a truly existent societal structure, one was a part of only one. You became a member of a clan by giving alliegiance to a chief, and did that to only one chief.
My paternal grandmother's maiden name was as close as we could get to a clan sept. It is a sept of both MacGregor and MacLaren. We chose MacLaren because they had cake at their clan tent. It's the little things that make the difference in life.
