Anybody else running Windows Seven yet?

I figure that any new operating system from Microshaft is going to be a bigger memory hog than Windoz XP. I don't really want to have a gig of RAM just to operate the box, and another to run what I want to do.

I'll use XP until it's no longer supported, just because it's what came in the box, then either move to Linux or get a Mac.

Actually, seven uses less memory than XP on my machine. And a LOT less memory than Vista. Besides that, if you've installed SP3 on XP, you might as well be running vista. The kernel is almost the same for the 32 bit versions at this point-and the memory hogging is actually worse on XP anymore. And considering you are talking about 2 gig being a lot of memory, I'm sure you're not running a 64 bit OS.

My family are all into computers, the DH is an electronics design engineer and always updating the software. We had a 4 computer network in the house at one time, it is down to 3 as my daughter uses wireless now.

I can use any OS back to Windows 95, and there has never been much bother with the pcs. There has been a bit of bother with disks going bad a few times over the years, but nothing too drastic.

The OSs are not updated but a new, clean installation made, which might be why there hasn't been many problems.

My daughter is using Windows 7 and there doesn't seem to be anything to complain about. I can ask about any specific function if you let me know.

Still running XP here. Would you say, if you know that is, that you can "divorce" so to speak the new operating system from the Microsoft applications and folders that it comes with (Messenger, Media Player, Internet Explorer, My Documents, etc)? Usually my biggest fear with a new Windows is that it will be months before I can successfully turn off or uninstall programs like those and delete forced folders that keep reappearing.

Well, My Documents is technically just a folder for you to put documents in, so that would definitely still be on your hard drive. Media Player 12 does come with the RC, but I use VLC for most of my media files, and have had no real trouble with changing the associations. I refuse to use internet exploder since the disgusting thing that is IE7 came out, and was able to install firefox without any problem whatsoever. Windows Live messenger does not come with the RC of 7. In fact, as I use messenger so rarely anymore, I haven't installed it on 7 at all yet.

I wonder if the separation of the Sims program is due to the way modern pcs are organised with facilities for different users, so the program is kept as 'your parts' and 'general parts'.

If there is only one user then it is not very obvious that the pc is actually divided into separate access areas.

Talking about Windows Seven today I was told that here in Europe there will be a complete stand alone OS available fairly soon, but in the US there will be an upgrade available, but you must already have a previous OS on the machine.

My main problem will be with the lack of a browser. If we change to W7 then I'll be hoping that the DH will have organised something to look after my mail and the several dozen rules which sort it into the relevant folders. Otherwise I might drown beneath an avalanche of mail.

I try to avoid any Microsoft product until it's been out for at least a year.
