Running
I want to put together a kilt outfit for running (more ventilation, right). I'm thinking I'd wear the same shirts as with shorts, and a hunting sporran.
But what about the shoes? I mean, running shoes definitely, and I don't want to pull up the hose, but picture the idea of scrunched-down hose with running shoes … disgusting.
So I guess what I am wondering is, is this a scenario where basic (not hose) socks would be acceptable with a kilt? I can't think of any other way to go.
No way I'm pulling up hose, and no way I'm wearing boots. What say you guys?

I say do it just as you would on a regular run, but with kilt in place of shorts...i.e., how would you wear your shoes & socks usually? That is what you should do.

Matt, there's a couple of pics on this site of guys competing in runs. They don't wear belt, high hose or sporrans. That makes the most sense, and is probably true to form for highland competitions.

I say just go ahead and wear whatever socks are appropriate for the activity. I think hose would look pretty daft with running shoes and a t-shirt.
By the way, you'll probably want to wear the sporran on a strap and slide it over to your hip. Running will be alot more comfortable (and less painful ) that way.

I'd go with a casual kilt in PV, forget the sporran and use the same footwear you would any other time.

The Kilted Mile Run
Wearing athletic socks and running shoes goes particularly well with a camo kilt, but makes sense with any kilt if you're going to be running. In most competitions just leave off the sporran. And one old-timer told me to twist the kilt around backwards, putting the pleats in front, to allow greater freedom of movement for the knees. (It was inconclusive whether it increased my speed. ) The focus on athleticism, competitive or not, means you'll probably not be wearing an 8-yd 16 oz wool traditional. Running for a clan, I wear a 5-yd 13 oz wool tartan casual of my own make. If kilts be clothes, not costume, then apply practical "rules" when deciding how to dress for specific activities.
The flyer for the race said, "Run Like Your Kilt Is On Fire!" Below is one post of me and Casey before, during, and after running the kilted mile at the Pleasanton, CA games this last summer. (Note: I'm older than that highway number... ... and felt twice that after the footrace. Also note the liberal application of water to quench the fire in the lungs.)

Because in the USA alone there are thousands of former runners who quit because they learned that running was destroying their knees, I think your first concern should be your own health and safety. Wear the shoes and socks that you think are most likely to protect you from injury. As to the kilt, I think running is an excellent application of the Sport Kilt Hiker.

Personally I like the look of low-rise socks if I'm going to wear runners with a kilt. I wouldn't run in a sporran either.

I'd say forget the sporran. You don't want something down there banging around!
