    My grandmother, from Edinburgh, while living in Florida, USA, used to tune in a BBC radio program on New Year's Eve to hear Big Ben ring in the new year; was one of her traditions.

    yup a traditon here too hence the term "the bells"
    for example someone may say to me "what are you doing for the bells" which is them asking what am i doing for midnight at newyear
