Now I need to figure out how to keep him interested until he's old enough to do the real thing.

The sword? or the caber? Walk softly and carry a big caber?

Hi Smayniac,
Great to see Scooby taking a interest. I've never heard of these 'youth' or 'beginner' or what ever they are called caber events. I thought that it was the big boys or nothing. Was it a proper caber toss competition for juniors? Or some kind of taster for non-caber tossers?
Regards
Chas

It was more of a taster event, they also threw a stone. The organizer had three cabers, ranging from three to six feet, and three stones, probably from four ounces up to perhaps a pound(I didn't heft them). I did a bit of research last night and found that in the UK there are youth athletic events, but there don't seem to be such things in the US. As I said, he had a great time, but if he can't do the real thing until he's 18(that's eight years plus a little from now) I think he'll lose interest. As you can see, he is a large young man for his age; I think he could do well if encouraged.
On the subject of the "style" of the event; I told Alan that they were measuring the caber tosses. I think it was a way of keeping the kids interested as most all of them flipped every throw. The organizer did point out to the kids when they made a "good toss," ie, it landed at or near 12 o'clock.
