Ah, thank you. I was previously under the impression that Marton Mills PV only came with a fringed selvedge. Seeing them both together, I think I prefer the tucked-selvedge PV.

I know that pv kilt will have a fringed bottom, But I initial question wasn't answered.
Can a wool 8 yard kilt have a fringed edge on the bottom?
Regards

To directly answer your question.....
Wool Tartan fabric for Kilts will not usually have a fringed Selvedge. In fact I've never seen it. (although I have seen some fabrics that would have looked better if fringed.)
I suppose Marton Mills could weave Wool on their fringe looms.
But this brings up the question - Why would you want that?
I suppose if you really wanted a fringe all along the hem of your Kilt you could sew on a strip of fabric and pull a fringe in it. There is usually a long strip of fabric left over from when you rip the fabric in half and not all of it would be used in the waistband. You could, I suppose, use that to make a fringe.
But as for Wool fabric coming that way from the weavers....No, I know of no such animal.

I wear the kilt because: Swish + Swagger = Swoon.

I can buy wool tartan from a textile store in Mtl, but it is not selvedged. It is fringed all around. I asked because I wondered if I could still make a kilt with it even if it isn't selvedged. I guess it'll look like a pv kilt. Or is wool going to unravel(sp) itself.

The answer was that pv could have a fringe. Nothing about wool.
Hence the reason I asked again. Then again, maybe my question wasn't clear enough. If it wasn't, I apologise.

What do you mean nothing about wool, Steve clearly stated that the fringe was only on the PV. One might conclude that there is no fringe on wool from his answer above, it least I did anyway.

I think what Steve and McMurdo are trying to say is that PV sometimes comes off the production line fringed, sometimes not, but that proper wool tartan NEVER comes off the line that way, unless specifically specially ordered that way. To answer your question directly, yes it is possible to have a wool kilt with a fringed edge, but you would either have to have the tartan specially woven that way, probably by Marton Mills on the loom they normally use for their PV fabric. Or I guess you could try to find someone willing to alter the existing traditional or tuck in selvedge of a piece of wool tartan to give it a fringed edge for you, if that is what you want. Kiltmakers make fringed edges on the right side edge of the front apron of a normal wool kilt anyway, presumably by taking a cut tartan edge and pulling our the vertical fibers for a half inch or so, so I guess somebody could do it for you, and hopefully in a way that would not allow the rest of the tartan from shedding further threads from the fringed edge.
We are all simply wondering why you might want a fringed edge on a proper traditional wool kilt, I guess.

Maybe he has a kilt that is to long and needs to shorten it and instead of hemming it he wants to band cut it to get it to a shorter length. Run a stitch Hay if you are going to that trouble just hem it to the length you need and remember to raise the back edge and the fold of the reverse pleat.

I would like to make one, but as seen above, it is in the only format that I can buy locally.
