I think you missed the point. I wasn't talking about the formality of the events. I could have as easily suggested that "Wearing a kilt to an Oktoberfest is like wearing lederhosen to a rodeo".

The first time I wore my kilt to a German festival, I ran into the president of the local St. Andrews Society. He was selling pretzels, If I remember correctly. My wife, of Austrian heritage, wears her dirndl to fests and I wear my kilt. Between the two of us, we meet a lot of people that otherwise we may never have met. And any way, she looks better in the dirndl than I look in the kilt.

The VAST majority of people who attend Oktoberfests wear jeans (or shorts if it's warm), t-shirts and baseball caps (I assume Highland Games and rodeos are similar). Even in Munich. I've been to many. I have family in southern Germany and have never seen any of them donning lederhosen. These days anything goes. I would (and do) wear the kilt to Oktoberfests and feel I fit in "perfectly" There's no disrespect for the "traditional" garb wearers, just my own thing. But then again, I'm neither German nor Scottish.

    Love the Lederkilt!
At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.
