Kilted halloween costume...?
Hi guys!
I know there's been a halloween thread set up but I'm looking for some extra advice on having a kilt as part of a halloween costume.
Basically I was thinking of going as some sort of Scottish regimental officer or perhaps a famous kilted Scot (obviously to be historically accurate - not William Wallace).
If going as something regimental; at the moment I already have:
a Campbell Ancient tartan kilt - which is the old Black watch tartan
a black glengarry (white & red diced) OR a plain black balmoral
green & white diced hose (I realise red & white are more regular, but these should be ok, right?)
a friend who says he can get me a black regimental doublet for pretty cheap!
a non-firing air rifle
(I realise I shouldnt run about with a fake gun but I'm going to my girlfriend's aunt's house and will be getting a lift there and back in a car)
Ghillie brogues OR brogues that don't tie up the leg.
I think I'd also need:
a white belt & relevant regimental buckle
horse hair sporran (although they're pretty expensive!)
red hackle
Optional bits & pieces:
parade sword
spats
I'm looking for advice on other cost-effective roles/people that I could dress up as that people may identify easily... or perhaps more information/advice on my current ideas.
Everything doesnt have to be historically accurate - as I'm on a tight budget - but it would be nice to look the part!
tapadh leibh!

Good luck.
Unless you play the pipe major on the Dewars bottle, I can't think of any one who would be recognized. Anyone on this site would recognize one of the characters from Tunes of Glory, but that's a bit obtuse for most folks.
Just post a picture.

Panache's MacBeth costume has given to some inspiration to my other idea. I could either completely blatently copy him or turn myself into a Scottish Jacobite!
I could even get some sort of wig and turn myself into Bonnie Prince Charlie?
Here's Panache's costume:

If going as a Jacobite soldier I could get a bargain piece of any tartan fabric on ebay, wear my green diced hose, perhaps still have my old-style air rifle and wear my balmoral (I realise the Jacobite's never wore Balmorals but whose to know?!)
I could either , shove on my dad's old leather jacket (underneath everything - just like Panache), or go for a black Jacobite/Ghillie shirt.
I could look around to borrow some buckle brogues - as I don't know anyone with relevent-styled boots to the period. I'd have a belt to hold my great kilt and perhaps put another leather belt over my soulder to the waist - just for the sake of it!
Have I missed anything?

Why not get one of those wizard hats, a pair of Harry Potter glasses, a magic wand and a scholars gown and go as Harry McPotter, the REAL Wizard of the North?

haha Harry McPotter would be a great idea but I couldnt take the emotional stress of being a wizard in a room of muggles for the whole night!
Harry Laudr's quite a good idea. To be honest wearing any Scottish dress I could say I was him... with a larger, darker wig for his younger days and a shorter, lighter wig for his older days.
At the moment I'm trying to look out a piece of really cheap tartan for my second idea... I'll hopefully get a bargain on ebay and therefore a really cheap outfit!

just my opinion, but if you consider a Scottish Regiment Officer's uniform as a costume....why not then also wear a placard with the name of that famous brit lad that faked his military record?
Forgot his name now.

Paul, I really like the Macbeth idea, but I thought you didn't want period type stuff. I was really trying to figure out an easily recognizable modern figure, and Dewars was all I could think of.
But before you try out the great kilt, be sure you know how to don one. It's not too hard, but it takes a little work.
Just show picture; we need pictures.

At first I thought I'd need to go and buy a lot of stuff for the MacBeth or Jacobite idea but after looking into it and seeing Panache's pictures it seems a whole lot easier than trying to figure out millitary uniforms.
If I went as MacBeth... I'm MacBeth - but if I go as a Black Watch general it isnt as identifiable to those not up on Scottish millitary history - and even then it doesnt have the same effect.
I'm really looking into the MacBeth thing to take it into a different direction to Panache's ideas. I'm thinking about no chainmail and a big beard. As it's set in the 17th century it wouldnt be right for me to carry a rifle (obviously!) so I'd need to get myself a sword, axe, dagger or mace if I want to carry something. I'll just wear a ghillie shirt, leather jacket, crossbelt and with a great kilt. I'll find a plastic crown too.
Basically with that idea I could end up spending only £10-20 which is perfect.
