I agree with those who said that just one more would be just right.

Personally, I have a low tolerance to heat, so I need at least 12- 5 lightweight for summer wear, and 5 heavier for winter wear, and 2 for formal occasions. (It used to be only one, and then my wife came up with the most astounding of ideas for a formal kilted outfit- that's going to be my Christmas gift from her this year- everything except the shoes. I know what the kilt/waistcoat/jacket combo is going to be because she needed to measure me and have me pick the material, but the sporran and hose she wants to get me will be a complete surprise.) So- the kilts that I have:

    For summer:
    1 Sport Kilt Clergy ancient
    1 USA Kilts Clergy semitrad
    1 black Amerikilt
    1 green Flamingo Kilt
1 USA Kilts 5 yard wool (13 oz- this one is also my formal kilt, even though it's a shorter yardage- remember my utter lack of heat tolerance!)

    My winter kilts:
1 16 oz Colorado State tartan kilt (5 yards)
    1 SWK saffron heavyweight
    1 SWK Nightstalker wool
2 SWK acrylic standards (great for cooler weather- not cold, but cooler- and really bad for hot weather, and both for the same reason! They don't breathe worth a d**n.)
1 USA Kilts 5 yard wool (13 oz- this one is also my formal kilt, even though it's a shorter yardage- remember my utter lack of heat tolerance! And yes, this is the same one from above. It is just right for all formal occasions, regardless of season.)

And then there's the one my wife is getting me for Christmas... I'm so stoked for that one!!

8 seems like a good starting number, one for each day of the week and an extra to wear while waiting for the laundry.

Interestingly enough 8 was also the number of bikes I needed, a race bike, a cross bike, a travel bike, a mountain bike, a beach cruiser, a coffee bike, a lazy sunday morning rider and of course old faithful for when the rest need repair. Any after that was just a want, not a need.

Of course 8 is also the number of chairs needed to properly enjoy a late evening cup of Cypriot coffee. One to sit on, one for each foot, one for each arm to drape over, one to lean the walking stick on and hang the hat from, one to put the coffee and water on and finally one to set the evening paper on. See, go with 8 and you can't go wrong.

I would hazard to say 3. Two that you wear on a regular basis, one modern and one weathered for some variation (also allows you a backup while one gets cleaned). The third would be your nicest tank, set aside for formal occasions to keep the pleats sharp and the colors bright.

I'm not including a beater, bc unfortunately I can't bring myself to be a complete purist. If I'm going to get rough or dirty then I'm gonna do it in some Carharts that are guaranteed to keep my legs safe (family jewels included). Plus, I hate ironing and that's going to be needed more often if I'm laying around on the couch in my kilt.

However, I think any occasion that I would be out in public is fair game for a kilting.

p.s. Let's make it 4. The last one would be Scotch guarded for sojourns to the bar or a rowdy night out.

Since I retired some months ago I’ll wear a kilt every day without this making me a full time kilter, however.

To my opinion you cannot possibly say how many kilts you “need”. Probably you’ll always “need” just one more.
Accordingly the number of kilts you “need” is a function of buying frequency and time.

I have 41. I still WANT more (have Maple Leaf material on backorder and also have my wedding kilt to make plus a few others my eye is on)...

If we're talking kilt ADDICTION, then I still need more. If we're talking 'what would be a reasonable number for a full time kilt wearer', then I'd say somewhere in the 20 neighborhood.

THAT BEING SAID, I get bored of some tartans (or solid contemporary ones) after a while. A good way to fund your kilt wearing is to sell one of the older ones you're no longer 'jazzed about' and use the money to put toward a new one. I currently OWN 41, but I have probably OWNED closer to 90 or so kilts...

Variety is the spice of life. Yes, the kilt is a very versatile garment and you can create many outfits with 1 kilt, but think how many outfits you can create with different colors in different tartans!

I got eleven or twelve maybe 13 (Various styles & quality) I'm not sure. And my wife does not approve of me in a "skirt" her words. Think of how many I could have if she approved. Dream on!
