Okay, I shall call it Bo-lermaker, and refer to Purd-e University. Of course people will think that the University will have created hair stylist rather than more Astronauts than all other universities combined.
I had considered Purd-e being territorial about it's trademark, however, one custom item as opposed to mass production can not be worth the trouble.
What did you think of the pattern, colors, location, ect?

Honestly, this seems like a bit of an end run to me; either approach your alumni association & see if they support the idea, or make it a personal tartan with a reference to the alma mater's colors.

Just have it made. You don't need to make any reference to the so-called university.
As for the tartan, well, it's pretty ugly and boring. But that suits purdue, so you're on the right track. (Seriously, I think it's too black. What's it look like the other way? )

A little school rivalry going there?
Anyway, my reaction is the same as it was for Steven's design - I think it could stand to be broken up a bit. I prefer the one with the green stripes over the first one, but still that large expanse of black undercheck is too much. Give vorapallemur's suggestion a go - swap the black and green stripes between the golds and try adding a narrow stripe down the middle at the very least.
As I alluded to in my review of the tartan designer, putting together a design that keeps everything in balance while still offering an appealing contrast is not as easy as it looks.
Regards,
Rex.
At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.

1) I am glad that my post inspired your creativity, although in full discloser, I learned about the tartan designer program from a previous post here.
2) I, too like “vorpallemur”’s version
3) My alma mater already has a tartan – but I do not like it much:
Stěophan, Clann Mhic Leňid na Hearadh
Steven, Clan MacLeod of Harris
Dandelion Pursuivant of Arms
