Purdue University Tartan
Big thanks to saharris who showed his new tartan design, and where he made it. www.scotweb.co.uk It got me to thinking about a tartan for my Alma Mata. So I made the Boiler Maker (not just the drink):

The BoilerMaker3 (not 3rd drink)

I like it and I don't like it. The first is just the two Purdue University colors Black and Gold, the second has green. The green could represent two things. First, my B.S. in Natural Resource, or, it represents the boat load of money I had to spend to get the degree. If I ever get it to my satisfaction, I am going to get a kilt made from it, oh, and the fabric to order is a min. of $90.00 a foot, and a min order of ten feet. It won't be this year.

Do you mean yards, perhaps?

Rex.

Yards it is, still out of my current budget.
Rex, did you not see my signature? I may not try to live up to it, but it does haunt me.

It's good to know there's another kilted Boilermaker out there.

Just a word of caution to all would-be tartan designers -- you cannot have a tartan registered with the name of a university without the permission of the university. For it to be considered "the Purdue University tartan" then Perdue would have to get behind the idea, and most such institutions are (rightfully) protective of their name and images.

That occurred to me yesterday, too, Matt. But would it prevent someone from having a custom tartan woven in colors inspired by a school's colors?
Regards,
Rex.

Okay, I shall call it Bo-lermaker, and refer to Purd-e University. Of course people will think that the University will have created hair stylist rather than more Astronauts than all other universities combined.
I had considered Purd-e being territorial about it's trademark, however, one custom item as opposed to mass production can not be worth the trouble.
What did you think of the pattern, colors, location, ect?

Honestly, this seems like a bit of an end run to me; either approach your alumni association & see if they support the idea, or make it a personal tartan with a reference to the alma mater's colors.

Why would you need to get the permission of the chicken company (Perdue) to create a tartan for the university (Purdue)? ![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
Just giving you a hard time, Matt. Us Boilermakers are pretty sensitive to this common mistake though. And don't even get me started on the people that call my alma mater "Purdon't."

Just have it made. You don't need to make any reference to the so-called university.
As for the tartan, well, it's pretty ugly and boring. But that suits purdue, so you're on the right track. (Seriously, I think it's too black. What's it look like the other way? )
