The Phillies area is also the home turf of USA Kilts and AmeriKilts so that explains it.

I have a Sportkilt works. It's a good lightweight kilt, a lot of Highland Games competitors wear them. I would get another Sportkilt, but probably only the basic model with the addition of fringe and sewn-down pleats. The straps are really for decoration only as the kilt is held on with velcro. The straps also get in the way of the right hand pocket (and I'm not fond of these pockets). Finally the sett on my Gordon Modern is very small, as you would expect from shirting fabric rather than the larger sett you expect in a kilt.
fridge. Didn't like the buckles...
Comes with a refrigerator? Guess that must be why they call it The Works.

Yep--I have a few "The Works" kilts from SK. I try not to even make comparisons between SKs and SWKs now, except to say that you can purchase both in 'off the rack' sizes.
My intitial question was about whether the "Ultimate" kilt made sense for a hacker like me to bash around in. I guess the jury is still out with me--I like the comfort of an SK and THINK I like the idea of cargo pockets--just not sure. To me, it is getting VERY close to a blend of a tartan kilt in a more contemporary style. Some hybrids give you amazing results--some give you duds.

I would agree that SKs (especially the "Ultimate" model) are in rather a different category than SWKs. The Ultimate SK attracted my attention awhile ago precisely because of it's contemporary style and availability in tartan... my kilt inspector does not approve of the sight of me in non-tartan.
For comparison, I would say the Ultimate SK would be similar in appearance to a Bilt Kilt tartan model http://www.biltkilt.com/kilts-tartan-kilts-c-13_19.html Both are machine sewn to custom size, feature a smaller number of larger pleats, and have cargo pockets. The price tag is lower on the SK because it isn't wool, which is probably appealing in a hack-around kilt.

The only kilt I've worn to date is my SK Commando model in ACU fabric. It's OK, but I think I could make a much better one...especially since it cost $160...not worth that. I don't know if it's because the ACU is "stiffer" than other fabrics, but it just doesn't swish at all. I also don't like the shallowness of the pleats and narrowness of the aprons. If I were to do it over again, for what the SK cost me, I'd have spent an extra $50 or so and gotten a Freedom Kilt...much better quality IMO.

I have a tartan SK with sewn-down pleats, a fringe, and side pockets (not cargo pockets). IMHO some of the other added features would just detract from it if I had them, and losing the fringe would save a few bucks without any loss of functionality.
It can be cheaper to get the 'works' or 'ultimate' packages than to buy the individual features separately, but you may be happier just getting the features you actually want. OTOH, I'm not sure that you can get the combination of tartan and cargo pockets without getting all the other stuff. That may be a gap in their marketing.
It is cool to wear in summer, the summers here being both hot and humid, and I can machine wash it (on delicate) and drip dry it with no problems (although that might not work if I didn't have sewn down pleats and might harm the straps if mine had any).
