If my brain cell serves me well, the Shepherd tartan was also worn by the pipers of the 102nd Tyneside Scottish Brigade during WW1. The Brigade - 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Tyneside Scottish (aka 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd Btns Northumberland Fusiliers) formed part of the 34th Division, one of Kitchener's volunteer divisions which saw its first large scale action on 1st July 1916 on first day of the Battle of the Somme. The division suffered that day’s highest casualties.

A similar tartan, the Buccleuch tartan, was worn by the pipers of the 4th Btn King's Own Scottish Borderers during WW1.
