I was recently asked The Question while passing a group of (middle-aged) men and women, but just smiled and kept going; I pass the same group again minutes later, and was told that they were still waiting for an answer. I said "I could ask the same question," at which point one of the women said "but you're too polite." But - as threatened in an earlier post - I now have a little pin on the inner apron of my kilt, which I can (and do) show my interrogators:

Amen brother, amen. I've actually had people trying to lift my kilt while I was piping. That's just over the top. Why anybody would think it was ok to put their hands on another without permission is beyond me.

This has happened to me a couple of times. If I wasn't a single man, it might be different. But I'm not. And it's not okay. Besides, it bothers me that there is a double standard here. Lifting a man's kilt is just as indecent as lifting a woman's skirt, and yet plenty of people think it's funny. There is a good natured side of me that wants to laugh along, but there is also a principled side of me that wants to have one of these idiots arrested just to prove a point.

But I don't. And I expect that I won't. I guess it all depends on how ornery I get as I get older.

What is it with the kilt and no underwear? It's a military regulation, is it not? When I wear a kilt, am I wearing it as a military uniform? No I am not. I wouldn't wear a kilt without underwear. Partly because I'm too straight laced for that type of thing and partly because the kilt would need washing less frequently if one did wear underwear. And I'm thinking it would be a major hassle to wash and iron a kilt.

That is really clever and funny! Throws it right back at the person asking the question, but in a light-hearted way. I must get one of those.

I have no idea what current regulations are in this regard in any of the Highland regiments left in the world. I don't see it addressed in the RROS Dress Regulations http://www.rhf.org.uk/Books/RROS%20Dress%20Regs.pdf. It certainly was a requirement at a time to my understanding, so it must have been written as a regulation somewhere. Everything in the military is governed by rules and regs, isn't it? Maybe it is/was tradition alone, but I do know it was a penalty in Canadian Highland Regiments in the WWII era to be caught wearing underwear with the kilt, as I had a Drum Major who spoke of that from firsthand experience. Always understood it was the same in Scottish Regiments, where the tradition started. Historically, underwear is a pretty recent phenomenon and the shirt was underwear until the 19th century, IIRC.

I initially wore something underneath for awhile when I first started wearing the kilt as a teen. Learned about going Regimental, tried it and it hasn't felt right to wear it any other way since. For some reason I left the shorts on last night as I changed into my kilt for Thanksgiving dinner. Had to doff 'em after a short time; didn't feel right. Sorry if that was TMI!

There certainly is no requirement and you should wear what you feel comfortable with for whatever reasons.

I think if I were asked, my pat answer would be, "the same that I would wear under my pants" -to continue the mistique of course. But I also think that each situation calls for a custom reponse based on the circumstanes.

While I appreciate that you would not wear your kilt without underwear, I don't think that I could wear the kilt with underwear, it just would not feel right, I think that I would feel that I was being fraudulent in some way.
I have never felt that some item of clothing should be worn under the kilt, is it not uncomfortable and reduces the freedom that the kilt allows?
I'm not sure but it would be sort of girlie to wear something under the kilt with the greatest of respect to those who do

I haven't wore underwear under any of my clothing for over fifty years. Going "regimental" is far more comfortable and less restrictive, IMHO, for me.
I have given many answers given in this thread. Last time to a favorite pub a lovely young female kept looking under my kilt and I finally said "Now you've seen mine show me yours." She began to remove her slacks right there in that very busy pub. I did stop her and said "Show me later." Later never came as my wife was with me. That wasn't the first time and won't be the last.

If it's a man, I usually ignore him. If he is insistent, I tell him "just your wife's lipstick". If he is single, I tell him to find a woman and have her ask me instead.

If it is a woman, I ask her if she is asking because she wants to see my red <cough>. I have a tattoo of a red chicken on my upper inner thigh to show if she says yes. I got it with the intention of calling it my "big" red ... . But, the first woman who asked to see it, looked and said without hesitation
"it's not that big!" Great response on her part.

I have had a few woman want to peek under. Some ask to reach under. I once had a woman give me mardi gras type beads. She "wrapped" them in place (with my wife's permission). One was very insistent that she lay on the grass and I walk over the top of her when I would not lift and show, but it was a public park with kids around. I just couldn't do that.

I was cooking burgers on a grill while kilted at a beer festival, and my wife told me to turn around. A woman was laying on the ground behind me scooting my direction. That same day, another woman asked if she could take my picture. I said OK. She quickly dropped down and snapped a pic from under! I doubt she got what she wanted since I wasn't sure what she was up to, and had started backing away. That was a little bold. Now, if she would have asked if she could take "that" picture, I may have obliged after a couple more beers.

One time I did agree to "that" picture! A younger girl in a plaid short skirt asked to have her friend take my picture with her while we both raised our kilt and skirt. I said sure. It was a biker rally, stuff like that happens. When her friend showed her the picture, she was suddenly surprised at what she saw. She did have panties on underneath. She avoided me for the rest of the day though.
