To see if I'm learning my lessons

Morning all,

Have a couple events this weekend that I'm dressing up in the kilt for. I'm still growing my wardrobe so some of my options are limited.

On is the Lipizzaner Stallions show. This is an evening event but not a majorly formal. I was thinking of a modified #3. Kilted with a nice button up and a tie. Unfortunately the only jackets I have are a suit jacket (that actually goes with a suit so not chopping) and the PC. Was thinking a dress sporran (black rabbit fur) and Cali Brogues.

The other is the theater to see Phantom during the afternoon. I was thinking a #8 but with a day sporran (I don't know if I'll have my new hunter before Friday).

So am I getting the hang of it? I wasn't sure on the Lipizzaner whether to go with a modified #3 or a #7 with the PC.

Let me first say that I don't know the type of weather that you are having at the moment, so bare with me. I think you are in danger of being over dressed with the PC in these circumstances. In Scotland a tweed Agyll(day wear jacket) and day sporran would do nicely for both events. Yes I know you don't have a day jacket! A pullover(sweater) will fit the bill nicely instead. Have fun and I wish I could be there for the horse show.

I would go with Jock's suggestion of a sweater, or go get a black 5 button vest for the horse show.

Sweater, all the way. Looks good, not too formal. So many kilt wearers overdress just because they have the gear. Leave the PC in the closet until it's appropriate.

When the missus & I went to see the Spanish Riding School on their North American Tour in St. Louis (2005?), it was very casual -- about the only gent I saw "dressed up" that night was the honoured guest, the grandson of General George S. Patton, who was wearing a blue blazer and a regimental tie of some sort.

Hmm.

I tossed on the only sweater I have with the kilt real quickly just to see if this is what you mean.

My wife wants to add the WILL be a collared shirt under it. I might check for a V-neck sweater at the base this weekend but most likely this is it.

With this I assuming Cali Brogues, regular belt, and a day sporran would be about all I need? Would this be a hose and flashes situation or just plain socks?

I'd say if you put a white shirt under the jumper you'd look perfect for the setting.

I think your wife is quite right, I think the shirt collar needs to be open and worn outside the present sweater. A Tattersall shirt would be perfect. With the V neck sweater a tie would be the way to go.Plain brogues( not Ghillie brogues)in this case might be better , well polished, with kilt hose pulled up and flashes if you want them. If you want you have no need of a belt as,I assume, you will be wearing your sweater over the kilt, but you may feel happier with the extra security of a belt. Yes a plain sporran.
