I've always thought that the studded hunting sporrans look all right with formal attire.

Mmmm.... Leather hunting sporrans... That one is just dead sexy. That would look great with any formal wear I would suspect.

I would only say that for formal wear it really should be a fur or hair sporan. As has been said elsewhere, however, there are no rules but others will wonder if you had forgotten to pack your dress sporan.
