    wooden sgian dubh?

    Greetings,

Anyone know where I can find an all-wood sgian dubh? I'm seeking an alternative to the plastic "safety" sgian dubhs to wear when a blade cannot be worn.

For when a blade cannot be worn I'm planning to get myself a sgian brew... it's a sgian handle with a bottle opener on it!
I had a website with solid wood sgians with no blade also. I'll try and look it out

    Mariner,

I got a handmade (lathe turned) safety sgian dubh made of oak from a whiskey barrel, from "Turned Out Fine" (aka Richard Shann) email: richardshann@btinternet.com. He lives in Hawick Scotland. I don't have time to post a picture (at work now) but I'm very happy with it aesthetically--it is Scottish handmade, classy, and has gotten compliments. It's fun telling folks that it's made from an old whiskey cask. I forget exact price--but I think around $20 and under $10 for shipping. My town has stringent knife laws, and I wear my kilt several times a week, so a quality safety SG is an important part of my attire.

Oh - I just remembered. When I was looking for a bargain sgian I looked on ebay for letter openers such as this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Handcrafted-An...item2c532c14a4
This one seems really nice, antler handle like a traditional sgian and then solid wood instead of a blade. You might want to try a similar search on ebay US.

you might want to ask specifically about wood or plastic since a lot of knife laws dont specify blade material and are written in a vague manner with lots of room for interpretation by police.

For wood work I suggest you check out Kilted Carver's work. Pm him and you can see his previous work at fromthelimb.com or he has posted photos. I have a walking stick that he carved and it is great.

This was my initial reaction as well!

A good disembowling could be done as handily with a decent wooden blade as well as with steel.
