Rit dye is a good choice and left over coffee grounds are great. Just add a tablespoon of vinegar to your rinse to set the colour.

Does this really work to produce a brown colour? How much, to how much water, and how hot, and how everything else? (We are not a coffee household, you see. So I would have to import some grounds)

I dyed my white hose with tea, and got a great, medium brown color as a result. I just set a big pot of water to boil, threw in about 10 tea bags, and when the tea was good and dark, the socks. Pull them out when they look darker than what you want, rinse well with cold water, and that's it...!

The good news is that every sweater and most shirts you own are perfectly suited to wear with a kilt- maybe even YOUR kilt. As for socks, you have heard enough to form your own well-informed opinion. I'd start researching a jacket next...
