I think you may confused about which two kilts Matt was referencing. Duncan's kilt (right in the top photo) is Hunting Stewart in modern colors. The two kilts referred to, though (left kilt in top photo, Rocky's kilt in the bottom photo), also appear to my eye to both be HOE's muted color scheme.

Must be a trick of the light which these colours seem to be quite prone to.
Elsewhere, this has been identified as HoE muted.

It doesn't quite look the same, but close I guess.
I had assumed this was HoE muted as well, but now I'm guessing it's ancient colours of some kind.

Can anyone provide images of MacDonald or a similarly coloured tartan in HoE modern?
