A Drunk's Opinion of my Kilt

I think the oddest comment I've gotten from one of our local drunks when out-and-about kilted was:

"HEY! I believe in Scottish People!"

...but my top comment on a kilt is also from a drunk - "Hey Switzerland!"

My late uncle used to tell the true story of when he was at an American airbase in the South of England watching the returning B17's coming in from a raid on Berlin. He happened to pass a bomber on the tarmac that was full of bullet holes and one of the crew, a gunner, was walking along the wing having a look see. So my uncle knowing full well where they had been for something to say, asked the gunner where they had been. A puzzled look appeared on the brave man's face and the reply came "....dunno Mac, what's that country called next to France? I will go and ask the Captain---", and he did!

Nah, mate. Has got nothing to do with America. I get that kind of thing all the time here in Japan. I had one Taiwanese woman think that kilts were Mexican.

People the wide world over lack geography education and Japan is no exception. Many of my college students can't place the USA on a world map. (No, I am DEAD serious). This story does not surprise me.

Went out kilted to a 4th of July BBQ/picnic in the park with some friends, and even managed to snag a couple of compliments from the local wildlife (a.k.a. Japanese people) who tend to be very reserved and shy to speak with strangers. (Tokyo -- not so much, but I live out in the country). Many people don't want to ASSUME that the kilt is Scottish so they generally ask if it's Scottish (or rather, if I'm Scottish).

Someone once said that war was God's way of teaching Americans geography.

If you want something that will keep you up at night wondering "how the heck??,"I have flown with military aviators, in Iraq, who couldn't point the country out out on a globe! Thank god for GPS, especially in the ordinance.
